Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

What is Internal Family Systems?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy approach designed to help the brain process difficult or overwhelming experiences that may still feel emotionally or physically “stuck.” Sometimes people say, “I know it happened in the past, but my body still reacts like it’s happening now.” Trauma and distressing experiences can become stored in ways that continue to influence thoughts, emotions, relationships, and nervous system responses long after the event has ended.
Many people who have experienced trauma, chronic stress, grief, anxiety, difficult relationships, or painful life experiences find themselves caught in patterns they understand logically but struggle to shift emotionally. You may notice intense emotional reactions, a strong inner critic, feelings of shame, people-pleasing patterns, difficulty trusting others, or feeling “stuck” despite your best efforts. EMDR helps create space for the brain and body to reprocess experiences so they feel less overwhelming and no longer carry the same emotional intensity.
At Helping Hands Counseling, we use EMDR therapy through a trauma-informed and nervous system-aware lens. Healing through EMDR is not about forcing you to relive painful experiences or “just move on.” The goal is to help your mind and body process what has happened so you can experience greater emotional freedom, resilience, and connection with yourself and others.
Your experiences may be part of your story, but they do not have to define your future.

Healing Beyond Insight
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidence-based approach that helps the brain process difficult experiences that may still feel emotionally or physically “stuck.” Sometimes we understand something logically, but our nervous system still responds as though the experience is happening in the present.

Addressing the Root, Not Just the Symptoms
EMDR can help individuals struggling with trauma, anxiety, grief, panic, difficult life experiences, and negative beliefs about themselves by working with the underlying experiences that may be contributing to present-day challenges.

A Nervous System-Informed Approach
Healing through EMDR isn’t about reliving painful experiences or forcing yourself to “just move on.” The process is designed to help your brain and body process experiences in a way that feels more manageable while increasing feelings of safety, resilience, and emotional regulation.

Creating Space for Lasting Change
As experiences become less emotionally overwhelming, many people notice shifts in the way they view themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. The goal of EMDR therapy is not to erase your story—it’s to help painful experiences hold less power so you can move forward with greater freedom and connection.
